| bdbrando's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1700-XL275 |
My work handed me down a Presario my first day. If you are looking for an all around mobile laptop, that is fairly easy to use, and will run all of your office applications, games and internet; this laptop is deffinately for you.
But, if you are a geek like I am, Compaq's line of products are a bit buggy and can become a serious pain if you like your computer customized. For one, the hard drive is partitioned. One partition is for the bulk of your work and storage, and the d:\ drive (usually) is for compaq quick restore. This backs up device drivers, documents, etc. and allows the user to restore any information with the click of a button. The problem is that it wastes a lot of space and cpu usage. Try removing this and install a zip drive instead.
The other problem that Compaq laptops have is that they buy no-name brand video and audio cards, so the drivers are very hard to obtain if you lose them. Also you won't be seeing many driver updates from Compaq. I have had a presario for 2 years and they never updated the drivers for it, and the video card is quite buggy.
If you are just getting into computers and you just want to play games, use it with Microsoft Office, or cruise the internet, this laptop is probably the best deal you will get anywhere. A plus is that you won't wait on the phone line all day to reach customer support. The average waiting time is about 15 minutes. As far as installing hardware, everything is so completely easy to install.
If you are looking for a faster, less buggy computer, consider buying a laptop with brand name audio and video cards so you don't have to deal with these problems.
