This system is a very nice performer with some really nice components for its price. The RAM should be PC133, rather than PC100, but hey, who am I to complain....
I would categorize this system as an excellent multimedia system for most people with one small caveat; the lack of a DVD-ROM drive is a bit of a let down. That's one way to keep the price reasonable, which they've done, but I'd upgrade the system to DVD before having it shipped.
The video is reasonably good, especially at the price. The nVidia chip isn't the best out there, but it's not bad either. The monitor isn't top of the line, but at the price it isn't bad.
The sound sub-system on this baby is just what I like to hear.... Turtle Beach makes some of the best soundcards out there and the Montego II is no slacker. The speakers are pretty nice too, but not the best bang for the buck possible.
The 20GB HD should be enough for most users, but you can upgrade at purchase if you need to.
The CD-ROM is a good one and, honestly, most people don't use DVD that much, but it doesn't cost much to upgrade to one at purchase time and you'll probably want one sooner or later.
I like the system; personally I would go with something with an ATHLON, but DELL doesn't offer them.
Could you get a faster system for the same or less elsewhere, absolutely.
Could you get a faster system that had better subsystems elsewhere for the same or less, probably.
Could you get all of the above from another major brand name, maybe, but not with the Pentium processor.
If you are willing to go with a clone system from a smaller name or build your own and use the AMD processor, you'll probably get a better overall package, but if you are going to go with a major brand name and want a put together package, you're probably not too far off the mark with this system.
One last note, if you do decide to go with an alternate system using the AMD K-7 ATHLON, bear in mind that with the early boards, you are limited to AGP-1 when using GeForce and some nVidia Video Boards.
