| fjw123's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet 4500 Printer |
I’ve succumbed. Bit the bullet and bought myself this wonderful mammoth of a machine: The HP Color LaserJet 4500. Yes, it’s very pricey and yes I won’t get *anything* for Christmas, but I am soooo satisfied.
After having gone through an Epson Stylus Color 600 and an Epson Stylus Color 850 in a year’s time; I came to my favorite site--Epinions-- and read the reviews on this machine. Well, my fellow Epinionators were right—right on the money. This was well worth the investment.
I like to make my own cards and I am studying graphic design. This is what I needed to purchase all along. My reasoning was two-fold: I would get the print that I was expecting to get and that I would save in the long run because I wouldn’t have to purchase replacement cartridges as often.
This machine weighs 140 pounds. It is a powerhouse. I got the 4500 model that comes with 32 MB of RAM and no network card. The other models 4500N and 4500DN do come with more RAM and a network card. I wish that I had bought the 64MB RAM model (4500N), but I can always add more RAM.
I printed an 8x11 photo at 300dpi and that did take a while to print. But, I’m in no hurry. If you’re in an office environment though- I’d suggest getting as much RAM as possible.
Everything is included to get you started right away. A parallel cable and all the color cartridges. Four cartridges—yellow, magenta, and cyan and black are included and an imaging drum. The cartridges have to be loaded in the order given in the directions. The markings on the machine and cartridges make it very simple to setup your printer.
The printer control panel houses all operations for your printer. You can set your powersave mode from minutes to hours. Options to change the language are also given. You can also lock your printer control panel to disallow users to change any of your settings. Establishing a password on this utility will keep your settings the way you want them.
The software utilities sent with the printer were only for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0. I am running Windows 2000 and had to go to the website to download the appropriate drivers. It was no big deal because HP’s website is quite user-friendly.
Two trays come with the printer. One tray is a multi-purpose tray for printing envelopes, cards, etc. and a 250-sheet tray. A third tray can be purchased that holds 500 sheets as well as an optional duplex printing accessory.
I did my first print on plain paper and all I can say is * wow *. This is it. I’ve found the printer that I’ve been looking for all my life (smile).
I surfed the ‘net and found the cheapest price that I could. I paid $2118 with $120.00 shipping fee from Online Micro, Inc. You can go to www.cnet.com and browse for printers. They’ll provide you with a price listing of all the sites that sell it as well as that’s site’s ratings.
