Hotmail is very popular, but it definitely isn't the best. If you are looking for a free e-mail service, look elsewhere. Hotmail has so many things that are wrong with it that it isn't worth the bother of signing up.
There are some good things about it: it's free, you can link it to Outlook Express, and it works with MSN Messenger (surprise). But it's riddled with bugs, neglect, and stupid decisions.
I signed up as soon as I found out about Hotmail. Within two days, I was receiving spam. I suspect that Microsoft's "secure" site wasn't so secure. I know Hotmail's been hacked before and it's fairly easy to find a password cracker specifically designed for Hotmail.
The service is very slow, even when I run it from the website. It takes several minutes just to get everything loaded, even on a decent connection. There's no way to send rich text files from the website. I've had problems logging in because I used underscores in my password, and I had to change it. I had some serious problems using attachments so I just forgot about it. The Bulk Mail section rarely blocks spam, and sometimes they block legitimate messages. I don't really think that Microsoft was thinking clearly when they said to use your mother's maiden name as a password.
There are some good things about Hotmail. The linking with Outlook Express is the best part. That gives me features such as rich text that I can't use on the web site. I can also store the messages without having to worry about running out of space. The MSN Messenger is barely functional, but it is adequate.
If you absolutely need a free e-mail service and you're willing to put up with a lot, then try Hotmail. Otherwise, you're better off going to a different service.
