We have always used AOL for our internet service. We never had too much trouble with it. I liked it for the ease of use since I'm not exactly a cyber queen (I'm working on it, however). We were using an old Mac that we dearly loved, but found it was just too slow to handle the new flashy technology. When all the ISP's started giving rebates on new computers, we shopped around. My husband found what he believed to be the best deal through Circuit City and CompuServe. Can anyone say REGRET?!
We bought our new computer with a gulp of apprehension. It was a large expense and we were assured that the rebates usually take about 8 weeks. Another gulp and the purchase was made. I was having a baby in the next few weeks, and so the money made us very nervous, but we trusted in CompuServe since they were owned by AOL. We filled out all the paperwork and forms for our various rebates and sent them in. We sent in a total of three. The first two came back relatively fast. Definitely within the time frame promised.
After about 10 weeks we began to investigate our CompuServe rebate. On their member welcome page we noticed a link for rebate information. We clicked it and discovered that according to their records, our rebate had been sent a month earlier! We could not believe it! We called their 800 number and were told to call another. That number told us to call the first one we tried and, well you probably get the picture. No one seemed to know how to help us. When they would look up the rebate information on their computers, they showed no rebate information for us!
To make a long story short, many phone calls and weeks later we discovered our rebate had been sent to the wrong address. They told us to send a new form and receipt. I could not believe it. It had already been almost 4 months and they were asking us to do it all over again. We refused and were told they could not do anything until we re-sent the information. Then, magically about a month later the check came. Mind you, we had not gotten around to gathering up the information to re-send it. I was just relieved to have it and went straight to the bank to deposit it before something else happened!
Since then, we have had lots of trouble with the service. We routinely get booted off the system and have to redial in. It's so frustrating. We are eagerly awaiting the day when our contract with them is finished so we can say "Goodbye and good riddance!"
