Just a night ago we went shopping for cartridges for an old printer we have. It's a printer we have never liked. Of course the cartridges are located usually in the same area as the new printers. As my husband was picking up cartridges, I was inspecting the new printers. Then I started calculating the price of the two new cartridges we needed. Hmm I thought to myself $68. for the cartridges and here is a HP printer for $89. "Hey George, since you hate your old printer anyway, why don't we just buy this?" Ha! He thinks it's a great idea. At Target the products are located directly under the display. Out of stock, figures! So we head to another city, Sacramento, California to Office Max. They didn't even carry the same printer we we're looking at in Target. But a brand new printer caught our eye. A Hewlett Packard DeskJet 842C.
I requested of the printer a test sheet. Vibrant colors, even in the store's uncomplimentary lighting. While the printer was running you could barely hear it. This is the printer we want! Cost $149.99
At one time all the equipment we had attached to the computers was a hodgepodge of brand names. Now, after purchasing this new HP DeskJet, everything on the computers is HP, including of course, the computers themselves. I started the HP kick way before we bought the HP computers. I needed a Fax, and a scanner, so I bought a Office Jet 500. It has been a great printer/fax/scanner. After that we must of been unconsciously, pretty impressed with the HP products, because as of now that is all we own.
The Hewlett Packard DeskJet 842C
Considering the quality of this inkjet it is dependable and affordable.
Print quality is sharp and vibrant with the HP's exclusive PhotoREt II color layering technology.
It is so silent, even in our small office space the noise is barely noticeable.
The printer can handle several types of paper, including plain and special papers, envelopes, transparencies, and banners. You can even tear off the perforations on tractor feed paper and run it through the printer.
The design is efficient, compact and stylish.
Print speed and quality. You don't have to give up speed for quality here, the perfect combination. (8 ppm black, 5 ppm color)
Easy to operate. You don't have to reach, stand on your head to add paper, or retrieve your printed copies. The out tray, in box, paper width adjuster and paper length adjuster are all within easy reach, right up front.
Other features include a single envelope slot and a banner switch. Years ago when I gave up my tractor fed printer I really missed not being able to make banners for birthdays and other occasions.
The HP DeskJet 842C supports the following platforms: "Windows NT 4.0, 98, 95, 3.1x, Windows 2000 Professional (USB support for Windows 98 and 2000 only), MS-DOS applications, and Mac OS 8.1 or above (USB-connect Macintosh only)." Manual for the 840C Series
Ink cartridges. Black is a cut little guy, product number HP C661515 Series, color tri-color HP C6625 series. The printer runs with duel cartridges eliminating the need to trade back and forth between black and color.
HP uses a special fast drying ink. I was impressed that the colored test copy was instantly dry.
Dimensions
Width-17.56 in.
Height 7.2 in.
Depth 13.8 in.

Lights and the buttons on the DeskJet are pretty basic, Power button and light, resume button and light, banner switch, and print cartridge light.
Paper input capacity is 100 sheets. Output capacity 50 sheets.
Limited Warranty is 90 days for the software, print cartridges and printer.
Customer Service has always been outstanding for any HP product we have owned. There are websites to refer to, forums, customer care audio tapes, call them, or email them. Maybe they even respond to smoke signals, who knows.
What all came in the box?

Black print cartridge
Color print cartridge

If it wasn't for the fact that I need my fax, I would retire my HP Officejet 500 and purchase the HP DeskJet 842C. For now, I'll just have to "borrow" George's new printer! Though, there is nothing at all wrong with my old 500. I recommend the 842C to anyone that wants a affordable printer with brilliant photo quality.
