| cbermom's Full Review: Intel PC Camera Pack |
I received the Intel PC Camera Pack this year for the holidays. My younger brother bought it for us. In fact, he bought one for each member of our family. We are all spread out all over the world, and we saw this as a chance to see each other more often. Travelling with toddlers gets awfully tiresome!
I am not the most computer literate person, so I was hesitant to set it up. My brother told me how simple it is to set up and he was right. Simply plug in the camera (ours has a USB connection), install the software, and voila! You're ready to go!
I was surprised right away at how small the camera is. It is about the size of a mouse. Ours sits atop our monitor. There is a slide-cover that opens and closes over the lens so it is not always open and exposed to elements (well, dust!).
We are thrilled with the software as well, although it has it's limitations. As far as I can tell, it does not support conference calling, which is a definite drawback. At first, we were using Microsoft NetMeeting (which DOES support conferencing). However, when it is simply a one-to-one call, I prefer the Intel program. It is clearer and, in my opinion, better. The image size for both the sender and receiver is adjustable, so you can easily see the person with whom you are speaking.
The camera can also be used to shoot still photos, although we've never used it for that as we have a digital camera. You can play games with the camera too, although I will say I felt foolish doing so. In one game, you shoot baskets. In another, you pop bubbles. Again, I felt foolish swatting around at things that weren't really there!
