| DarkAgeTat2's Full Review: Sony Spressa Professional |
Well after putting off buying a cd re write drive for about six months now, I decided to finally purchase one. After looking around the local computer stores I found a Sony Spressa for a mere $150. Of course I jumped on it being that it was a brand name for less money than the generic drives. I am glad that I did. This drive has performed flawlessly since I got it. As far as the ability to read CD-ROM's it does an average job. Most people don't spend that kind of money for a CD-ROM though. The ability to write RAW data at a blazing speed is almost unheard of. It also has a huge buffer that keeps it from creating coasters. Out of the fifty CD's that I have burned now I only created three coasters. The first was dirty, the second was my fault and the third was my piece of junk Memorex CD-ROM that decided to stop reading in the middle of a burn. The ability to write a CD from the beginning all the way to the end exactly the same as the origional makes it a must for anyone that want's to back up that expensive software. It will write CD's that have enormous amounts of bad sectors. My only complaint is that it won't read the same information. For that you have to look some where else. It was also capable of writing at speeds faster than 8x (8.2x) on media that was only designed to be used at 6x and below. Now for the downside, the included software sucks. Don't use it. I was unable to get that software to burn anything! There is better software for free on the internet, and even better if you don't mind paying a little money. After messing with the software for a day it was removed from my computer never to see my hard drive again. When I bought the drive it was OEM. Meaning I got a drive in a bag with a cd and a rubber band to hold it all together. So I couldn't tell you about any kind of installation grief for the average user. It will also burn 80 min CD's, or so I am told. I haven't tried it yet, but I don't see it having to much trouble. If you can get your hands on one, spend the extra money to buy it. You won't be dissapointed.
