IBM Aptiva. Not highly recommended.
Jan 31 '00
I bought this IBM Aptiva E series 500 in January 1999. I wish I would have waited. It is not all bad but it has enough bad points to say it was a waste of money. This computer was sold to us based on a number of features.
1. This computer had a 400 mhz processor. I was told at the time that it was basically the best available. I later found out the day I bought the computer they already had 500 mhz available. I was also told it was a pentium II and later found out that it was not. To top all that off the next month they brought out the pentium III at the same price that I gave for this computer.
2. This computer had a 4x DVD Drive. Problem? It has never worked. IBM technical support has never been able to get it to work and they spent just enough time trying different things to fix it that the warranty ran out and now they will not replace it.
3. The computer came with Windows 98. I have yet to get a Windows 98 disk though. I have had technical problems where they asked me to reinstall my Windows 98 disc and I keep telling them that I was never given one. They told me it was on my Crash and Recovery disk but who wants to completely crash their computer to fix a simple problem that can be resolved by reinstalling Windows 98.
4. I was promised 24 hour technical support for 1 year. The first time I needed technical support I went to my manual to get the number and it says that I have 30 days of technical support not 1 year. I called the number that was given and it said I would have to give a credit card and pay $28.00 for 30 minutes of technical support. I went back to Office Max where the computer was purchased and they gave me a free number to call for help. It was very big hassle to get a simple problem fixed.
5. I am not sure what really causes this but the computer freezes up all the time. If I have the computer on at least 3 hours a day I can guarantee that it has frozen up at least twice. I will be in the middle of typing and then nothing will work. The mouse will not work, and I do not even have the option to use Control+Alt+Delete. I have to manually turn the computer off and wait for it to run Scan Disc to restart.
The computer does have some good points. It is a neutral color so that I can always find matching hardware. It had competitive amounts of hard drive space. I have plenty of programs installed on the computer but I still have 86% of my memory left. The computer came with some useful extra software and some fun games.
The negative aspects out-weigh the good points so I have to say that I do not recommend this product.
