Amedia Pocket Pro - A lot of trouble in a small package

Written: Jun 17 '00
Pros:has a lot of memory
Cons:terrible power management, losses data

I purchased the Amedia Pocket Pro PDA thinking I was getting a good deal. It was priced below most other PDA devices, and seemed to have a lot of great features. While there have been some things about the Pocket Pro that have been nice, many others are very problematic.

Nice features include:
A built-in 33.6k modem, 8 8 MB of RAM, uses Microsoft CE, which I happen to like. It allows you to keep track of contacts, schedules, notes, and tasks. It also synchronizes data very well with my computer.

However, I have run into several problems in using the PDA that make it very cumbersome…. So much that I would NOT recommend anyone purchase it as it currently is:

Battery Life: My first complaint is that its battery life is VERY short. It seems to go through a set of AA batteries every few days.

Battery Life Monitor does work: Added with the above fact, the system monitor that tells you how much power is left in the batteries does not work. It always reads that the batteries are fully charged… up until it will no longer run because they are dead.

Backup Batter Non-functional: Although the monitor says the backup batter is fully charged, I find no evidence that it works at all. Once the main batteries are exhausted the entire devices memory is dumped and you lose any data you had saved.

Changing Batteries loses data: On top of all the problems above, when you change the batteries in the unit, you lose all the data that is saved. This occurs no matter how fast you change the batteries. The only way I have found to avoid losing the data is to change one battery, then replace that batter cover, then remove the batter cover and replace the other battery. MUCH to much of a hassle….

Reminder: The pocket pro has the features of setting reminder to go off when an even is due. The only problem is when the remind goes off, it flashes a light on the pocket pro. If the pocket pro is in your bag, left at the office, or anywhere else were you won’t get to it, the light remains on and it drains the batter in hours.

In short, the Amedia Pocket Pro has been a huge hassle. I would not recommend purchasing it…. The PDA is suppose to save time, not consume it!
