| ezouwen's Full Review: Acer ScanWit 2720S Film Scanner (35 mm) |
I bought the Acer Scanwit 2720S a couple of months ago because I wanted to put my photo archive on cd-rom. Scanning the film seemed to be the quickest solution (which it is :-)
Almost having bought the Minolta D’Image Dual Scan II, I accidentally found the Acer. I bought it because it was cheaper, higher resolution and had a SCSI interface.
I feel sorry I ever bought it: technical quality is not good, it is very sensitive for dust on the films, getting the right colors is a very tedious job.
My Acer is extremely sensitive to how the film holder is closed and inserted. Just a flinch of a millimeter difference, or a not 100% correct film strip (for example the end or beginning of a film), and the scanner creates errors. Especially a problem, because at that moment Windows2000 shuts down the program, which takes minutes and slows down your system by 99%. I am already using my 3rd film holder, since the first two didn’t work at all (errors only).
The 3rd on is also already broken, but this doesn't make a difference so far.............
But ok, I’ve got it under control now somewhat. However: getting the right colors is difficult. You have to choose which film you are using, but the Acer has a very limited choice of films. Even choosing the right film, doesn’t always gives the colors you are looking for.
Also this can be managed, but then remains the sensitivity for dust. No matter how well you clean your films, there’s always something left. And it shows, bigtime………….
Considering all the problems, I do not recommend this machine to anybody. However, it remains the cheapest on the market, as far as I know, and it looks cool.
