This was one of the easiest things to install on a computer I've bought, and I've put these in a few other computers as well as my own.
It's pretty much a no-frills drive, but it's been reliable for me. Out of maybe... hmm...200+ CD's I've burned (audio and data) I've maybe had 10 coasters, which I would attribute to most being my fault (trying to do other things on the computer at the same time, images spanned across many physical drives with very little swap file space, etc.).
The supplied software, NTI cd maker has a fairly austere interface but is set up fairly logically IMO, relatively to other burner software I've encountered. Audio importing can be a pain with it, but not terribly so.
Audio cd's I've burned on this play in every cd player I have, including an old Fisher that doesn't like to play some commercial cds I have. The only problem I've encountered is that it wouldn't run disk 2 of _Riven_. I'm not a gamer at all so I can't comment on it's reliability as merely a read-only drive for that application, but for writing CDs it has suited me well, and well for friends who have this drive. When compared to other manufacturer's drives I can *highly* recommend this one, given that it seems like everyone I know has trouble with cd writers from other manufacturers.
I used it briefly on a Pentium 100 system with 64 megs with no problems, and now through a PII 333 and 450 system with 64 megs and Win98 II.
*One thing* I might ad is that because I do a lot of digital audio recording, I have 7200 rpm drives, which could be a factor in my personal success with this unit, but other people I know have had success without this advantage to my knowledge.
