Wanna upgrade? Here's how.Dec 23 '00 (Updated Dec 24 '00) Write an essay on this topic. There is one thing to remember when buying a processor: The newest is OVERPRICED. Say there is a 1ghz processor, and a 1.5ghz processor. The 1.5ghz is going to be about $400 more than the 1ghz. Also, never buy a processor unless it is more than 200mhz better than yours, or you won't notice much difference. Make sure you get the right processor for your motherboard. Now that you have bought your processor, you'll want to install it of course. To install it, you'll first have to know if it is a socket type, or a slot type. If it is a socket type, it will be square. If it is a slot type, it will look like a big card. Open up your case and look at your other processor. You should be able to find it easily, but if you can't, you might want to call a computer place up and ask them. It will be the thing with a big heatsink on it and a fan. After you find it, remove it. To remove a slot processor, pull on it and push the black things on each side of it away. It should pop out pretty easy. To remove a socket processor, pull up the arm on the side of it and pull out the processor. Now to install your new processor. For slot processors, you will want to place the processor right on top of the slot, making sure the gold "pins" are lined up with it, then start rocking it back and fourth. It should go in pretty easily. To install a socket processor, place the unit on the socket, and move in around until it goes in. It is impossible to put both of the processors in backwards. After the processor is in, put the arm down, which will secure it. After you are done, hook the computer back up with the outer casing still off, and see if it works. If it works, put the outer casing back on and you are done. If your motherboard has switches on it, you might have to set how fast the processor is. To figure out the right settings, call the company who makes the processor and ask them. Also ask them how to set it, if you can't figure it out. If you can't get it to work, just put your old processor in and give up. Go back to the store and tell them it didn't work, and say that you still want one. They will probably give you another processor and send you on your way. Good luck! |
