I'm no "newbie" to the instant messaging scene as I've been using AOL for about a year now, and have had ICQ for close to six months. Recently, I downloaded a new program, the Yahoo!Messenger, and have been very pleased with its ease of use and variety of features. I mainly use this program only when I'm at Yahoo because it allows you to chat with other members of Yahoo, and in the different clubs, you are able to see who has the program on, and can communicate with them instantly.
Like any other IM program, you have a buddy list where you can add your friends on to. This program has smiley faces beside the members of your list, and they are yellow and smiling when your friends are on, and sort of grey and sleeping when your friends are logged off. It also has sound effects to let you know when someone either logs on or logs off, in addition to a bell-like tingly sound when you receive an instant message. Although I have yet to utilize the conference or voice chat features, it's nice to know they are available, as I've used such features at ICQ, and they expand your communicating ability greatly.
You could say I'm still building up my list and exploring all that the Yahoo! Messenger has to offer, and have overviewed its numerous features. It's extremely user friendly, much less confusing than ICQ can be. You can instantly access Yahoo home, stocks, news headlines, sports scores, your profile and others', and more. You can even portray a status message such as "I'm Available" or "Not At My Desk" so your buddies will know whether or not to IM you. There is also an ignore list that you can use if you need to. The messenger box only takes up a small portion of your screen, a corner if you choose to put it there, or it can be dragged around the screen. There is even a "search Yahoo" feature that you can show or hide.
The Yahoo!Messenger is made for ease of use, but unlike AOL, where ease of use equals limited features, the Yahoo!Messenger has the right amount of added features, but not too many like with ICQ. It even has instructions for those new to the program, so you can have it up and running, as well as a good understanding of it in no time. I'd recommend it for anyone in the Yahoo community because it will bring the other members of Yahoo to life.
