What is RAM and how do I install it?

Well, you just bought some RAM. Any idea what you are supposed to do with it? This review will tell you everything you need to know about buying and installing RAM.
So, you are at a computer show or in a computer store because someone told you that you cannot survive in the computer world today with 16 megabytes of RAM. What exactly is RAM? Random Access Memory. In short, whenever you open a program it gets loaded into RAM. If you are a multitasker, this is especially important to you.
RAM is extremely cheap nowadays and it will continue to get cheaper as the years go on. Right now, the standard rate for 1 megabyte of memory is about one dollar. Not bad, huh? I would recommend you buy as much as you can.
First off, look in your computer for your memory slots. Older machines will have 72-pin SIMMS (Single In-line Memory Modules). Newer machines will have the more advanced 144-pin DIMMS (Double In-line Memory Modules). In order to install RAM into a SIMM slot, you must install a pair of chips, not just one. For example, in order to get 32 megabytes of RAM, you must buy two sixteens (2, 16's). With the DIMM slots, only one chip will be needed, not two like the SIMMS. It's a little confusing but so is putting the correct time on your VCR, as opposed to the flashing 12:00.
Have you ever put a Sega cartridge into the system? Installing RAM is as easy as that. Really...! Just make sure they are in the right side and match the holes with the port. Make sure you put them in a 45 degree angle and then when they are set, just snap them in. Make sure your computer is turned off and you have grounded yourself. If not, kiss your computer good-bye. EMS will fry it.
Them restart the computer and see if the BIOS can tell if it is there. If so, good job. Look forward to a faster computer. If not, redo the steps and make sure it's in right. Thanks for reading. Hopefully you have learned something about the memory inside that case.
