| aimam's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 3500 A400GT |
Before I entered my first year of college in 1998, my dad and I were on a frantic search for a laptop that I could use during my four years of work. It had to be fast, powerful, easy to carry around, compatible with a network, and reliable enough to last 4 years. Sure enough, we found it.
My dad used the Dell website, which is overly user-friendly and easily navigatable, to by my Dell Inspiron 3500 notebook. On the site we got to choose whatever we wanted to include in our package. The leather carrying case came free with the purchase, due to a special deal Dell had that month. For about $2199, the laptop came with:
- 300 MHz Pentium II Processor
- 64 Megabyte Ram
- 2 Hard Disks, about 2 GBytes Each
- CD ROM , i forgot how fast, but very fast.
- A floppy drive, that can be connected via Parrallel port, or replaced at any time by removing the CD-Rom drive.
- 14.1 inch LCD screeen, very sharp colors.
- a 56k Gold Card Modem ( can be used in 20 different countries)
- 2 empty slots for any extra pc cards that would be installed. -
- An Infrared port.
This is just the hardware, the software we got was amazing.
-Windows 98, with free upgrades.
-Office 97, with free upgrades ( Now i have Office 2000)
- A Microsoft Reference pack, including Streets 98.
- A3D , and Crystal SRS 3D Audio sytem.
... And much more.
All in all, i got one of the best laptops out there. Right now, it is almost the year 2000, and i'm sure that my laptop will last for atleast 5 more years. This summer hopefully, We will purchase a 500 MHz, replacement processor, which will make everything flow smoother.
My computer rarely crashes, and it always ends up fixing itself. The Dell company offers online support using your product identification number. They can fix your computer using the internet, its amazing. The keys are very quiete and easy to type with and the mouse is conveniently located. You can change the sense of touch on the mousepad if you need.
Right now i have my computer hooked up to a fast Ethernet connection using a 3com Etherlink II card. I find that the Novell network easily integrates with the Dell laptop. I am able to run multiple tasks at once both through the network and on my computer.
For college students, this computer is a must. It is about 2.5 inches thick, and can fit in my backpack. It is not very heavy at all. I use it alot to go to the library and type up notes and bibliographies on the spot. Also very helpful for papers. I can print a paper anywhere using the network or my infrared capabilities.
Overall, this laptop is the best thing that happened to my college studies.
