| rpohlman's Full Review: Hercules 3D Prophet |
People looking for leading edge performance and technology without paying absolute top dollar should take a look at the 3D Prophet. As more and more DDR Geforce cards are trickling onto shelves, the prices of the SDRAM cards continue to drop. I picked up my Prophet for around $250 but have seen it going for closer to $200 on some online stores. With the phenomenal performance that comes with the GeForce chipset as well as TV-Out and a fairly amusing bundle of game and video demos, the Guillemot 3D Prophet gives a serious bang for your buck.
Installation went without a hitch which included the drivers and the bundled game demos. Also on the cd were some small programs to show off the abilities of the Prophet. Nothing special about the included software, but that is understandable to keep the price low. The drivers were solid and you can count on Guillemot to provide good support. I had no trouble with any of the games I tried it on (Quake3, UT, NBA Live 2000) and I have no complaints about the frame rates I was seeing.
Those with deep pockets that must have the very best should look to the DDRAM GeForce cards, and if you already own a TNT2 or G400 then the performance boost from the 3D Prophet probably isn't worth the money. However if you were like me and still hanging on to a Voodoo1/2 or TNT card, the Prophet is a great upgrade without sucking your funds dry. The Prophet's TV-Out capabilities give it an advantage over competitors such as the Creative Annihilator, as its crisp, clear DVD playback really needs to be seen on a TV, not to mention being able to do some gaming on your big screen.
