Maybe Excellent; Maybe Awful; Better Steer Clear

The Bottom Line I still haven't got my rebate 14 months and three phone calls later. I would avoid this company before it goes any further south.
I bought one in July 1999. 400i. I was impressed with quality and performance for the money--it was unbeatable. After one follow up phone call I received my rebate for $75. Has worked fine since EXCEPT for the power supply which makes noise every month or so because it needs to have the dust blown out and removed with a q-tip.
I bought another emachines in December 1999, 466id. Also impressed with quality for money. However, I still haven't got my rebate 10 months and three phone calls later. They are BSing me. "Oh it'll be sent out in 30 days."
Both of the first units were made in Korea of largely Korean components. However, the latest models are made in China and the cases are noticeably cheaper. However, a friend of mine got a Chinese 500is in May 2000 and it is still working well so far (i hope). She still hasnt received her rebate after 6 months either.
I have heard of the emachines units having high repair rates. In addition their customer service is maddening junk. The repair process is also not very satisfying--many have waited a couple of months for the turnaround and of course didn't get their hard drive back and lost their data.
In addition, emachines is in financial trouble. This helps explain the fraud now going on in the rebate department. All in all, as much as I hate to say it, I would avoid this company before it goes any further south than it already has.
Update: 14 months and counting; still no rebate . . . they still insist it's "in the mail."
