| BuyBeware's Full Review: Philips PC 400 Series External USB |
I bought the Philips 400 drive back in July, 2000, after I decided that I needed a backup device for my computers. I chose the Philips based on some positive reviews I had read on the internet, but I am now amazed at how much can be left out of those reviews, until the readers buy the product and discover the problems for themselves.
When I first installed the software according to the instructions in the box, the Philips kept on locking up, which yielded a frustrating experience of disposing numerous CDRs into the garbage. The problem was resolved when I was informed that there were a few critical updates I was missing on my computer that would hopefully resolve these problems. I found these updates after having to delve quite far into Philips website, almost deeper than any human had ever gone before.
The burner works fine to this day, and does a fine job when it is running, whether I am backing up data or burning off new CD. The only quirk that still has not been resolved with this unit is that it sometimes fails to communicate with the computer it is hooked up to, therefore causing me to have to unplug the USB from the computer and plug it back in.
This is definitely not an easy CD burner to work with, but it does do the job.
