Acer CD-RW: Disappointment
Written: Apr 02 '00
Pros:Has "over-burning" feature
Cons:Not very reliable, at least for me.
I purchased the Acer CD-RW drive, mostly because it was the cheapest one. I got home, installed the drive, and found out it didn't work. So I returned it to the store and got another one. The second drive worked, and worked pretty well - it was fairly reliable in burning discs (only about 2 out of 10 being bad copies.) After about two months of use, the drive failed and wouldn't be recognized by the system. I worked on it for days trying to fix the problem and eventually called tech support, which tried the same things I did to get it working again, declared it dead, and had me RMA it. I returned the drive and received a replacement about two weeks later. The new drive hasn't failed yet, but I'm not expecting it to last much longer.
A good point of the Acer CD-RW drives is that it can do something called "over-burn". Overburning is a method of getting even more disc space from a CD than it advertises by using space that's normally unused by most drives. If you like to make a lot of audio CD's, then this is definitely a feature to consider. However, this may not be the drive to consider it on.
