Buying a brand or not?

Dec 26 '99

Most of the time when you purchase a product, you have to take into account its quality, its price and also, most of the times, you're likely to buy a well known brand. Nowadays, computers have become very popular and you can find them in every big mall, but, the question is do you have to buy a very well known brand or not?
On this holidays season, I've watched the different products offered by companies, such as Compaq, Dell, Gateway, ...., it seems to me that their prices are very high for the stuff they offer (in laptop or desktop). Most of the times the prices are from 200 to even 600 dollars more than an anonymous computer. And also the anonymous computer is often more powerful! So, you would say "I should buy an anonymous computer!!!", you're maybe right, but you have to be aware of some things : first, be careful of the toll free support hotline for your computer, after, try to know if there's a bundle (the softwares ) with the computer, it can saves you a lot of money if have it with the computer (like office 2000 for example, because the price is included in the computer's one).
I would say that, if you're short of money, and think that you're able to understand how work your computer, the best is to buy an anonymous PC. You won't be disappointed since you're able to re-install the system if there's a crash. Or, also if you know someone with good skills in computer science, you can convince him to help at the beginning and after a few times, it would be ok for you. If you feel at ease with that, you should spend the extra money on periphericals instead than paying for the brand. I think it's the best deal for me.
If you feel that computer is something mysterious for you, and you don't know anyone with good skills in computers, maybe you could consider buying a brand PC. But, see the different services offered, because it's not always the biggest who have the best things to offer...
If you're a computer's gamer....I don't think you need any advice. I mean, you should have your customized PC with the latest graphic card, and I'm sure you have re-installed windows so many times you don't even need to have a toll free hotline!!!! So, I'm sure you don't have any brand PC. Or, if you have so much money you don't know what to do with it, you can try to give it to some caritatives organizations instead!!!!
The other thing is that sometimes it's easier to customize non-brand PC's, I've seem Compaq users stuck with PC's they couldn't customize as they would after buying it (I mean they have to keep the hard drive's partition like it was when they have bought it. It's really ridiculous to me!)

And remember that what is important is that you try to figure out before buying what kind of things you're going to do with it. It's not necessary to have the latest video card just for internet or word. And remember, if you want to have a dvd player on it, that your graphic card has to be able to handle the decompression of the movies, if not there's no need to have dvd player....
