| yatesy's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS T600 |
Last October my old computer died. I needed a new one, and I needed it fast. I've always liked Dells, and as a computer tech, I have almost always recommended them to other people. So, I took the plunge and got the top of the line at the time. I bought the Dell Dimension XPS T600. My machine came with 128 megs of ram, a Viper video card, DVD player (with hardware decoding, yes! tv out!), STB Tv Tuner card, CDRW drive, Sound Blaster Value card, 20 gig hard drive, Harman Kardon speakers and a Dell 19 inch monitor. At the time, it all came to about 2700 bucks.
My machine was delivered promptly and I had it set up quickly. Everything worked right out of the box. I set into loading up all my programs and setting up all my internet settings. Everything installed smoothly. As time went on, I started to run into a small problem. Sometimes when I was booting up the machine, it would stall right after the windows screen right before it would hit the desktop. I would hit the reset button and it would reboot and everything would be fine. I tried to fix it, but nothing I did could fix it. After 3 calls (and not much waiting), I was told I had to reformat my hard drive. This seriously aggravated me because I would have to redownload alot of programs but if it had to be done it had to be done. I reformatted and ran into a problem reinstalling the drivers for the tuner card. Again, the tech support from Dell came through for me. Its nice to see that in a company.
The CDRW drive has worked without fail. It is bundled with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator. This program, while nice for simpletons, stinks. I have since switched to Nero. The DVD player has worked well, again, with little problem. If you like a high resolution (mine is 1240x480), it is essential to knock it down to 800x600 or else the DVD just will not play. If this is normal for all DVD players, I am not sure. I have yet to use the TV tuner card, but I will soon.
Anyway, I have had almost zero problems since with this machine and I work it with graphics programs like Photoshop and I do alot of web design. However, I would recommend if you are going to run either alot of games or alot of graphical type programs, to get 256 megs of ram.
I give this machine a 5 out of 5. I have beat it up and down and it comes back for more. Even better, the machine held its value for almost a year. You can't ask for more then that!
