I have had nothing but problems with my HP 2600 AMD Athlon. (Reply to this comment)
by notacompgeek
I have problems downloading software, after I download it onto my computer it won't run right. Has there been others that have had the same problem with this particular computer? I have a three year platinum warranty and have taken it in twice to get it fixed and they say if you have to take it in to get it fixed three times then they consider it to be a lemon and are suppose to get you a new computer, by the way I purchased it at Compusa. What computer do you recommend that I get? Thanks for any help you might have.

Great advice! (Reply to this comment)
by nad_masters
Still out of date. :) But definately a great advice to newcomers and PC gamers alike.
I just started up a business at home, pretty much wanting to build new PCs, upgrades, repairs, etc. The benefits of a locally built PC much outweighs the IBMs and HPs of the world. I always suggested that if you don't want a local shop to build it for you (for whatever your personal reasons), then the next best thing is Dell or Gateway (build-to-order). This is a free country, afterall. :) And it is your hard-earn cash.
It's not much now (I don't know how to code HTML), but I do have a registered domain name and a "website" up (if you can call it that now, haha). www.ps-innovations.com
Definately a temporary page right now! (Almost plain text saying "we're here, but we don't have a site yet!" hehe).
Okay, this is begining to be a shameless plug. :) But you can see why I wish people would follow that advice more often. :) A lot of new PC buyers never sees a local shop because of the way IBM, HP, and Dell advertise. What a local shop to do?

Re: Urgent Update (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the suggestion. It is very out dated and in dire need of updating. I will make sure I do that hopefully over this holiday weekend.

Urgent Update (Reply to this comment)

If you want more people to read your review again, you may want to consider updating the advice to today's PC requirements.

I agree (Reply to this comment)

but also would emphasize to be careful about compatibility issues later down the road. As long as quality parts go in, it's usually not much of a problem. Nice epinion.

My husband builds all our computers, and we know what is in them and their limitations beforehand.
Thanks for the review!

I can't emphasize how little Brand Names mean... (Reply to this comment)
by Cutie_pi
We have three PCs in our home, all of which we have had built exactly as you described here. Each time we have gone to have one built (2 of which were in the last 12 months) we did all the research ahead of time so that we knew what we wanted, and just had the computer store order it and build it for us. With the one we built last year, I had decided upon a 28GB IBM hard drive, both for it's size and speed (7200rpm with a 8.5ms seek time). BIG MISTAKE!
When we ordered it, no one warned us that this IBM drive is KNOWN for running really hot, and therefore has a tendency to -- ACK! -- CRASH! So after having the store replace it once, and IBM replace it a second time, when it crashed a third time (mind you, each subsequent crash was a NEW drive) we decided to replace it with another brand (and have been sailing along fine since then).
Side note: IBM has since stopped making this drive.... apparently we weren't the only ones with a problem!
Great review and great advice!
Take care,
Natasha
