In 1993, I bought a Japanese made 486DX2 66mHz (Yes, 66mHz!). At the time it was the fastest computer out there and I bought the set up for somewhere around $2,300 including a bubble jet printer. In 1996 I signed up for AOL's trial membership and then suddenly I discovered my computer was ancient! All my friends had these super fast processors, with gigabyte drives (mine was 240mb drive . . . don't laugh). Geez, my computer was old.
THE GOOD: As a graduate student, my professors all used DELL computers so I decided to look into DELL for my replacement computer. I went on-line and had my computer custom built to my specifications. Here's what my computer consists of: 500mHz, 256k RAM, DVD player, Altec speakers and a Sony (DELL) Trinitron Monitor. I decided to get the Hewlett Packard 895CSE Ink Jet printer as well. I bought a Hewlett Packard CD burner and installed it myself. Then I added a HP 6300CXI scanner. I am into digital photography and storing my photos on CD's is a snap. OK, EpinionBarb requested more information so here it is: I am running Windows 98, Adobe Photoshop and Quark.
THE BAD: OK, it was expensive $3,200 but DELL's customer service is great. Technical support is awesome and FREE! Try calling Acer, HP or other computer companies and get your credit card ready because you will have to pay for their technical support. All of my friends say I was foolish to buy a DELL when I could have bought a similar Compaq for several hundred dollars less.
THE UGLY: Well, my friends are very jealous of me when I create photographic enlargements of their photos because it beats out their local photofinisher's work. My DELL does a fantastic job in digital work and retouching I do on old photographs. Setting up this computer was so easy. DELL outlined everything from A to Z and it took only 25 minutes to get it up and running.
The bottom line is, you can't beat a DELL. I received my DELL in March 1999 within 5 days of ordering it! It's awesome and I will replace this DELL with another should the day come where my computer is out-dated.
