I used this notebook configured with 18gig HD, 128mg RAM, DVD, 14.1" display since Jan '00.
Everything works very well except when it goes into suspend mode. Many times, it won't wake-up. Hard reboot takes care of the problem, but annoying if it goes to sleep often.
One of shortcoming of this blue-devil is status LEDs. There are three in the center front of keyboard, but they are located little sunked-in and these LEDs are very small. Minor glitch, but still a glitch in design.
Unit I got came with 3com Winmodem. Used the modem for a while, but seemed a little slow. Especially when I'm playing some MP3 with internet connected. and So I took it out and popped Xircom 10/100 56k combo realport card. I immediately noticed the speed of internet connection and apps running slightly faster. I wish Dell would use regular PC-card modem instead of Winmodem. Little extra cost, but I'm sure buyers will throw $50 or so extra for such benefit.
After some hours of use initially, the screen corners faded a bit. I guess this is permanent thing. Now I have four corners slight darkened.
Keyboard is excellent. Travel of keys are the best I've used including IBM notebooks.
