I've been playing Mechwarrior when it was nothing more than cardboard cutouts with Mechs painted on them, moving on a map placed on my dining room table. I was skeptical about his game because I was not too thrilled with Mechwarrior 2. I gave that game a poor review. Mechwarrior 3 was 10 times better than Mechwarrior 3. I didn't have to have my screen set to 256-color mode to play like Mechwarrior 2.

The graphics were fantastic. When you launch your missiles you see the smoke trails. When you fire your Autocannon, your Mech jerks from the recoil. Mech leave footprints when they walk. Burning Mechs give off black smoke. You get a good 3D feel from the landscape and from other Mechs. Controls were easy, especial with the Microsoft Sidewinder joystick but you require the keyboard as well. They have training missions to help you learn the controls and how to fight. The campaign missions are straight foreword. You have lance mates that you can give orders to. There are Mobile Field Bases that repair your mech. You can salvage destroyed mechs for parts. These parts can be used on your mech or you can add that mech to your arsenal. You can also customize your mech. Each mech has a different variation. You can even choose the color of your mech.

Installing the game was easy. Like most installations, it had step by step instructions.

NOTE: If you have a Sound Blaster Live or Sound Blaster 128, you need to download the 1.2 update from Microprose website. This is the only thing I did not like about this game.
