The Dell Inspiron 5000 is a great machine. The 14.1" active matrix monitor is user friendly towards the eyes. I use mine for hours at a time and have no problem. This machine is not too heavy. I purchased an extra 64 MB RAM for a total of 96mb. I highly recommending acquiring more ram than the 32mb that this machine comes with. Two other extras I purchased were the larger hard drive (6.0MB), and a Xircom 10/100 modem/Lan card combination. This card is very practical because you can switch from modem use to Ethernet use and both ports are built into one very small card.
The speakers on this laptop compared to other speakers of comparable quality are better than average. The keyboard area and flat mouse pad is quite large. I have been impressed with the almost 3 hour battery life. The CD rom is in the front of the machine. The disk drive is on the left side.
All in all, this is a fast machine.
