I bought my Memorex 4224 CDRW last July. I figured that the time has come when a CDRW is not an option anymore. The 1.44 floppy drive does not cut it anymore. Zip drives and the like where an option, but most people cannot read a zip disk unless you haul the disk along with you everywhere that you go. I had to have a CDRW, and Memorex made one that I could afford. This CDRW certainly wasn't the fanciest on the market. Its 24X8X4 speed was more than I would need.
The unit installed without a hitch. I really like it when that happens. I installed the software, and was able to burn CDs!
I was not too impressed with the NTI CD recording software. It was not all that easy to use. When I run the file CD utility, it always opens and windows explorer window. If I closed the windows explorer window for any reason, I would always get a referenced memory error when I closed the NTI software. The software was not as intuitive as the CD maker Pro version that I have at work. It allows you to use the CDRW just like you would use any other disk. The software that came with the 4224 was quite a bit more awkward to use.
We where able to make mixed music CDs, but this was an awkward process as well. I had to copy the files from the music CDs to my hard drive and then start a whole new disk image and select the wav files that I want and copy them back to CD. It seems like there has to be a way that the software could keep track of these steps for you, but it didn't.
I burned about 70 or 80 cds with this unit, and I have only had 3 disks get ruined. My machine is getting old and obsolete (233 MMx 96 Meg Ram). I was usually vigilant about keeping my processes minimized to avoid problems. I shook my mouse frequently when recording CDs so that my screensaver would not come on. I seemed to have problems when that happened.
Overall, I thought that the CDRW fulfilled it function. I was able to store large amounts of data on CDs and transfer them to other computers. I was also able to make some mixed music CDs.
Unfortunately this CDRW is no longer functioning as I expected. After 1.3 years in service, it quit working. The CDRW will not open or close when commanded to do so. The button on the front does not work, and the software commands do not work. The one-year warranty on this product is expired, so I will have to do the repair work myself, or pay more than it is worth to have someone fix it for me. I am betting that the prospects of this unit working again are pretty poor.
