A good auction site, but not perfect

With the booming success of online auction site eBay came many imitators from Amazon.com to the Go network. Yahoo! Auctions is right behind eBay in popularity, but its nowhere near the big E in terms of community, selection and ease of use.
If you already have signed up for any other Yahoo! service, such as mail, My Yahoo! or calendar you are ready to bid and sell on Yahoo! Auctions. The site is similar in catagory structur from eBay, but it is a little more detailed than eBay. For example, in the Beanie Babies section, you can go right down to the type of beanie you want and look at listings just for that type. Keep in mind, the categories are not as detailed as others. If its popular (Pokemon), you should have no trouble to find what you want.
Even though Y!Auctions is not as deep as eBay, it does have some features that would kill the bay. You can view the remaining time of an auction in a Java clock down to the last second. So "snippers" will rejoice on that one. If you are in a category and you want to just look at nothing but pictures, you can. I believe this is much more efficent than eBay, since fewer people use the gallery feature. The best thing about Y!Auctions is that its FREE to sell! You don't have to put out your credit card nor be 18 to bid or sell item. A big advantage over eBay. With the Yahoo! alerts system, you can also have them send you an alert whenever a certain item comes up.
With the good...there is the bad. The most obvious reason why eBay is more popular than Y!Auctions is the simple fact that eBay has TONS of bidders and sellers. This might be very good for some bidders, but if you are looking to seriously sell here, you are better much off with the bay. I continually see more items with no bids at all-even minutes from the auctions end. Plus the search is kind of screwy. If you are used to eBay's search, you may be frustrated with your results at Y!Auctions. For example on eBay, I would do "Sony Walkman" to find titles with those two words. On Y!Auctions, if you did that, you would get some irrevalant results.
With its strong brand name and easy to use features, expect Yahoo! Auctions to stick around for a long time. Still, the lack of selections in many categories will scare off many potential visitors and community needs a boost.
