I bought the Altec Lansing ACS33 3-piece speakers a few weeks back hoping to add four point surround sound to my system (I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value sound card and already had a 3-piece JBL Pro Premium speaker set). I got them for about 40 dollars, which is a great price for a name-brand set of speakers.
I plugged them into my rear speaker output from my Live! Value card and matched the sound levels with my JBL speakers. I setup up the four point surround using the drivers that came with the Live! Value.
Now, I tested it out on some of my mp3s. I turned up the sound and was very pleased by the sound and bass that the ACS33 was giving. However, sound became very distorted at higher volumes, so I was a bit disappointed. However, I found it gave great sound at low to medium sound levels.
Next I tried out some games. I loaded up Unreal Tournament and was pleased with the weapon sounds. The ACS33 was able to work together with my current JBL speakers so I could distinguish exactly where my opponents were. Sound was crisp and clear, except when I turned it up at higher levels, which then it gave out distorted sound once again.
Overall, I recommend these speakers only for people who have mediocre sound systems such as 2 piece sound systems, and who want a nice upgrade in sound quality (especially in the bass) without putting too much strain on their wallets. The sound is fine enough for most users, but for those who are sound enthusiasts or want great sound should look somewhere else, such as a 4.1 or 5.1 sound system.
