I've been an Audible fan for years and was quick to purchase the player Audible made several years back. As I recall, I paid around $200. I would still be raving about that player if it weren't for the new Audible ready MP3 players. I couldn't resist getting a new one when Audible started selling the Diamond Rio500 for $99.00 with a subscription plan. In fact, I noticed that there is now a $50 rebate being offered on their website.
The new players such as the Diamond RIO 500 offer better storage capability (64mb), sound, formats, portability and yes…I can play MP3 files. Another nice benefit is that I can transfer my content via a USB cable much faster and free up a COM port. The time I save in transferring data is great as I can easily fit multiple books on the new device as opposed to splitting up one book on the old device. And since these new MP3 players were built for digitized music, you can bet the sound quality is improved over the old players.
Ironically, even though the Diamond RIO is an MP3 player, I can count on my fingers the number of times I've actually downloaded music to it. The reason is that player can hold maybe an hours worth of music, but it can hold upwards to 28 hours of spoken content (based on the format you're listening to). Sure, I could mix music and Audible files on the player but there is so much good content to listen to.
If you like listening to Books on Tape, NPR, Robin Williams, Wall St. Journal, etc, I would definitely suggest getting one of these players with the subscription plan. When I first purchased the Diamond RIO, I opted for the $9.95 subscription plan a month. I could then apply that $9.95 each month against any content. Since then, Audible has provided more options such as a Frequent Listener plan. Instead of paying the $9.95 a month, I upgraded my plan to the $19.95 plan that allows me to download 5 books.
Another benefit to these players is that they are so small you can take them anywhere. I routinely take my player with me to the gym and in the car. It's amazing how much content you can hear during these times. Besides, I was never a big fan of the music played at my gym. Now, I can choose what I want to hear.
