Finally Home Storage needs satisfied at a reasonable price
Written: Mar 18 '00
Pros:Portability, Attractive Design, Easy to Use and Install, Flexibility, Reasonably priced for what you get
Cons:Average transfer rate, tech support closed on weekends
Ok folks, here's a product for the guys who love to crash their systems on a regular basis. Also if you have several computers at home you are going to love the OnStream DP30 external backup tape drive.
First of all, I hate floppy disks, and Zip drives. They aren't cheap on a relative basis for what they store. And nowadays 12GB drives are the norm not the exception. So what's a Soho user, home networking type, or family going to do when he wants to backup stuff and not sit around all day long swapping disks in and out?
Buy this external tape drive that's what!
This parallel port drive (retail price $400)transfers data at a rate of up to 3.6GB per hour. You could get a model with the SCSI that doubles that rate, but I'm too cheap to pay the extra $$$. It's looks good and comes with a stand so it can sit on your desk in a space efficient way.
Of course,if you have a number of computers you can carry it around easily.
Did I also mention that it supports Windows 95,98 and NT?
The tapes have to be bought separately. And these ADR tapes hold up to 30 GB each! Now how does that storage capacity compare with floppies and Zips?
This thing was so easy to install. To do my first backup was literally a 3 click process- 1 to install the tape devices drivers, 1 to do a complete backup and 1 to click done.
This is one of the best hardware value products I have seen in a while. OnStream has a real winner on their hands with this one.
