| brainsurgguy's Full Review: Micron Transport ZX |
After an exhaustive search and due diligence through the laptop computer world, myself and two colleagues decided on Micron's improved Transport ZX line. So far, we have not been disappointed.
The configuration of my computer is:
Pentium III 700mhz
128MB RAM on 1DIMM (leaving 1 DIMM open for further expansion)
12GB HD
6X DVD
15" active matrix screen
7.3 lbs.
It took 7 days for my Micron to arrive, their turnaround time seems to be improving as compared to earlier reviews.
Here are the issues that steered us to the Transport:
1) We were looking for a name brand with a reputation and history. We researched the Dell, Gateway, Micron, ARM, Sager, Sony, Toshiba, Winbook, Quantex, Panasonic, Compaq, IBM, and a few others.
2) We wanted to avoid soon to be antiquated technology. Hot swapable and smart bay features were very important along with upgradibility.
3) Screen quality and a Magnesium alloy case were big plusses.
4) Technical support availability. This was not a big deal in that we stuck to name brands.
5) Price!!!!!
Our search led us to the Sony Vaio and the Micron. They both had all the features listed above. Price led us to the Micron.
My system booted up right out of the package. It is super fast. The touch pad, once mastered is easy to navigate. The keyboard is one of the better that I have used on a laptop, although it seems that the symbols are decals, not imprints. The 15" screen is brilliant!
To date, I have had no crashes or major conflicts.
The DVD plays smoothly.
A full array of ports are all functioning. (2 USB, PCMIA 2 & 3, Serial, IR, Printer, card slot)
A swapable super floppy and Zip drive are available. A CD-R is planned for the near future.
Negatives: 1) The sound volume when playing a DVD is low. This has been my experience with all laptops. This is not a problem with headphones.
2) You need a special S-cable to interface with a LCD projector. Why this is not mentioned or included is a question.
My overall impression is that this is a fantastic machine with speed and power to burn.
