The best filter for the buck

As a parent and a technology coordinator for a school district, I have two distinct but compatible opinions regarding filtering software.
1) There is only one infallible, completely secure filter. That is PARENTS or another responsible adult!!! Anyone who expects to turn kids loose on the internet and not have them experiment, or not be lured by catchy-looking web sites, or not accidentally find inappropriate sites, or not be relatively human does not understand kids, especially teenagers. It is best if you or someone you deem responsible is with your child at all times while on the internet. Yes, even with a filter, some things can come up, but you or the responsible person can steer the child away from those areas of the web, and explain what otherwise might be baffling and incongruous with your family's value system. (I don't care if your children are teenagers or not. My experience with teenagers is that their activities on the internet should be watched even more closely.)
2) That said, DO buy a filter system! An analogy for having a filter vs not having a filter could be as follows: on the furnace in your family's home, do you want a filter or not? Sure, a filter doesn't keep out all the dirt and other floating matter, but it does keep out a great percentage. An internet filter works the same way. And who wouldn't want their children to be shielded as best they can?
Spend time with your children while they are on the internet, and buy a filter. It's well worth the investment of your time and money.
