Stunning Machine vs Poor Service.
After I read PC Mag's review of the latest Millennia Max, I emailed Micron's international sales division from Hong Kong and bought my Millennia Max. A PIII 733, Via chipset(with good rating from Tomshardware), 128Mb 133MHz SDRAM, 20Gb ATA-66 HD, GeForce 256 Display, 40X CD-Rom, and a 3Com controller modem combine into a very good specification.
The overseas delivery service (via DHL) is VERY FAST, and I received my machine within 4-5 days. I believe I am the only Micron user in Hong Kong. Micron has no distributor or on-site support here.
When I booted up the machine the first time, it simply roared to life without any hiccup whatsoever. All latest drivers are pre-installed. 3D games play real fast in either OpenGL or D3D modes. Notwithstanding my installation of various software titles and heavy use afterwards, the machine never fails me or hang up in front of me. In a nutshell, it is the kind of machine you will never regret buying, in particular when you pay A LOT LESS than comparable systems from Dell, Gateway or Compaq.
The service, however, has much to desire. Before I placed my order, Micron's sales had said the computer would be delivered with a recovery program installed in HD. A separate CD of the same program will also be provided. Whenever disaster strikes, you just run the program and restore the machine back into factory defaults. BUT THE MACHINE AS DELIVERED SIMPLY HAS NO SUCH THING. I called Micron and they said they simply DO NOT HAVE such program. It is not exactly the kind of treatment I would expect from a brand-name. Micron do provide "ConnectSupport.Com" for on-line testing and healing, but the functions are limited eg. the PC-Doctor (for hardware testing) is very much scaled down. Needless to say, these on-line supports are worthless when you cannot even boot up your machine.
Micron's support web is highly disappointing. When I bought the machine, the support page says it will come with a Creative Lab Ge Force card. When I opened the box, it turns out to be a Visiontek OEM Ge Force card. The Via chipset (south bridge) is also different from that advertised. Luckily, it makes no performance hit this time. But consumers have the right to know, don't they??
My experience with the machine is mixed. The hardware is sexy but the quality of Micron's service really suck, I am afraid. Excuse my language.
