My Pride And Joy

Written: May 15 '00
Pros:Better Price, More memory, Expandability
Cons:Slightly heavier than the Palm V

I received a new Handspring Visor Deluxe for my birthday several months ago, but I have been an avid follower of the Palm-related market and have seen, used and read about a variety of devices...

I cannot be more pleased with my Handspring Visor and the Palm Operating system, which is makes the Windows CE concept an absolute joke (Windows CE is a competing Operating system for hand-held and portable devices). The Palm OS is wonderful!

Okay, now for the details...

The Visor Deluxe is a better VALUE. It runs $250, is anywhere from $50 to $100 cheaper than the Palm V, and can be bought off the Handspring website or from select stores. Because of this, Handsprings have Out-Sold the Palm V every week since they debuted in stores around the country.

The Visor has four times as much memory as the Palm, with 8mb to the Palm's 2mb.

The Visor is EXPANDABLE, an ability which the Palms do NOT have. With the much-hyped "springboard" modules, you can turn your Visor into an mp3 player, add a modem, extra memory, even really cool games, like golf (check out www.handspring.com for details -- they are adding new modules fast).

It is 100% Palm OS compatible, which means you are running the same software as the PalmPilots. The ability to enter all my data and appointments on the PalmDesktop program on my desktop computer, then "HotSync" it with my VIsor, makes it absolutely worthwhile and efficient.

The handspring is completely USB compatible with all software and cords included, and it works wonderfully with my Macintosh G3. The PalmPilots, on the other hand, require an additional "Macintosh Connect USB" kit for $40 or so.

Admittedly, the Palm V is a slightly slicker little machine, and is about an ounce lighter, but with less memory, less expandability, and a higher price tag, it would simply go against all beliefs to get an inferior machine for more money.

Handspring was started by the same people that started Palm (don't ask me why, I don't really get it, but am certainly not complaining) and have created a wonderful product...

You cannot go wrong with a Handspring!
