I'm a college student and find that music is an important part of the college experience. Thus a good system is essential.
The Altec is a great system for the price. It's almost as though you are buying at cost:
Buy.com sells them for 35.95 as of Nov 20, 1999:

I currently also own a set of Midilands 4030, which do not compare to these Altecs, which I listen to all the time.
PROS
The Altec's output bass is GREAT . It booms and maximum sound can be reached without too much distortion.
Lower sounds are also pretty crisp, but the fact of the matter is that the BASS is strong. Sometimes, it may overide the sound quality.
The setup is simple for the beginning user. There are two satellites and a decent sized subwolfer. The satellites speakers cannot be mounted and cannot be detached from the cord. One of the satellites offers a Volume Control.
CONS
As for sound quality, these Altecs are decent, not great. I listen to a bunch of songs (mainly MP3's through Winamp). They range from rap (Tupac) to international songs (Asian music) to pop/rock. So both treble and bass are important. Treble on theses Altecs are almost non-existent. These speakers are for bass hounds. Sound quality does tend to distort at higher ranged sounds. Still, the bass kicks.
The Altecs' wiring is a bit simple. There are 2 satellites connected to subwolfer. And there is just one plug. As I mentioned, there are no wall mounts. And, there is only one volume control button on one of the satellites.
Overall, this is a simple system with GREAT BASS and decent sound quality. At less than 40 bucks, this is highly recommended; it's almost a steal deal. These speakers are also suitable for gamers.
