Nothing but problems
Feb 22 '00
I work with computers everyday and am very knowledgeable about computers. I purchased/ordered a Gateway Pentium III 700 with CD-RW, DVD, surround sound speakers, 19" monitor in late January from their county store. I choose a Gateway thinking that if I had any problems with the computer I could go the country store where I purchased it and discuss the problem with someone, one-on-one, face-to-face. I was happy to receive the computer 4 working days later and it worked fine the first night. After, however, the first night I had nothing but problems with the computer. On the second day I could not play a CD or DVD in either the CD-RW drive or the DVD drive. The hard drive would not stop reading/writing information the entire time I had the computer on (at least 4 hours) the remainder of the time I had the computer. While operating the computer the speakers kept cutting in and out. On the third day the sound quit working completely and some of the Windows '98 programs would not operate properly or at all (telephone application, Encarta, Travel program, etc.) I had called to the country store from where I purchased the computer and told them I was having problems. They offered no help and said they are only a place of sale nothing more and I would have to call their "tech support". I called their "tech support" waited 20 minuites to talk to someone and received the run-around after talking to someone. After the run-around they decided to send me a new sound card and said that if I had any problem installing the card to give them a call. Did I mention I paid the extra $100 to get 3YR IN HOME WARRANTY? I told the "tech support" person about the warranty and I got transferred 2 times and had to wait another approximately 30 minutes to talk to someone else. I talked to another person and told her that I was very unhappy with the service I was getting and after a long talk of trying to get this computer fixed she said that she would make sure that they would ship the sound card next day air and that a service technician would call in the mean time to make an appointment to replace the sound card. I waited for two days and got no sound card and no call from any service technician. By this time I am very disappointed and would just like to just return this computer for three big reasons. One, the computer is brand new and does not work and Two, I feel as if Gateway was happy to get my money but now does not want to support the product that they just sold me and Three, I can not get any help from this company to get this computer fixed even if I wanted to keep this computer. I called again and inquired on what I needed to do to return the computer. I got the impression that they were very unhappy that I was even considering returning the computer. I learned that I would lose all shipping and handling cost ($216.36) both to ship the computer to me and also to ship the computer back to them. After insisting that I wanted to return the computer then they offered to replace the CPU. I had enough of this company and did not want to take a chance on the new CPU being bad. While waiting for the paperwork to return the computer to Gateway I received the replacement sound card 6 working days after she told me "next day air". I did not however receive any phone call from a technician to replace the sound card. I would not recommend a Gateway system to anyone. I have since returned the computer and am still waiting for my money back and have order a Dell computer. I am VERY happy with Dell. FYI I also have a friend that has had a Gateway for about 6 months and she had the mother board go bad on her. Gateway had to come out and replace it.
