You can never have too much storage space!

Jun 07 '00

Anyone who has followed computers over the past few years knows that the size of the hard drives have been getting larger and larger while the prices have come down dramatically. In 1994 I remember my family buying a brand new Compaq computer from one of the major retailers at time. It came with a whopping 200 MB of hard drive space. At the time, this wasn't considered that small because most of the programs were only a few MB in size.

Today, computer users need a lot more space then 200 MB. How much you actually need depends on what you use the computer for. The bottom line with computer hard drives is... you can never buy too much. The worst that is going to happen is you're not going to end up using all your hard drive space. Most likely though, if you don't use all the space right away, larger programs will come around in the next couple of years which will need that space.

A standard size hard drive that most people should purchase with a new computer should be between 10 and 20 GB. For those who do not know, one GB has 1000 MB in it. Even if you do not think you will ever use this much space, if you can afford to buy it, do yourself the favor and spend the extra money. It will most likely save you from purchasing another hard drive in the future. Some of the larger hard drives today are around 40 GB. If you can afford to buy this much space, do it.

If you are more picky about spending the money, it is very important to consider what you will be using the computer for. If you plan on just using the computer for surfing the net and using Microsoft Office, then you can probably get away with a smaller computer. If you plan on storing MP3 files on your harddrive, you might want a medium to large sized hard drive. Each MP3 file is about 4 MB in size. This doesn't seem to large but if you plan on storing hundreds of MP3s, the space is taken up quickly. If you plan on buying a lot of new computer games and keeping them installed on your computer, definitly go with a larger hard drive. Each new computer game with good graphics is between 100 and 200 MB. As you can see, it doesn't take too many of these games to begin to clutter your hard drive.

And most of all, remember that anything you buy with a computer is always obsolete in a year or two. Hard drive space is no exception. One year from now people will look back at this opinion and laugh at the size hard drives I was recommending. By then we'll probably have 100 GB hard drives and downloading movies that take up 100 MB. We'll see....
