HP Pavilion 8660C

Feb 03 '00

Posting my opinion here since there's not a category for the 8660 yet.

This is a good power computer for the home user. It comes with an Intel P3-533 Mhz chip, 128 meg of PC-100 SDRAM, 20GB HD, 8X DVD, CD-RW, 3 1/2 floppy, 56K modem, integrated 3D video with 11MB RAM, programmable keyboard, two button scrolling mouse, and a 10/100Base-T networking interface card. I matched this system with an NEC Multisync 19 inch monitor.

The computer itself has been a joy to work with. It is an extremely fast and capable system for my needs. As a stock trader, I spend a great deal of time using this system everyday. The ease of setup and customization (desktop) allowed me to immediately begin to be productive with it. The keyboard is comfortable and easy to use. Unfortunately the programmable keys for connecting to the internet default to connecting through AOL. I use a DSL connection and don't go through AOL. I have been unable to reprogram the keys (following the directions given in the User's Guide that came with the system) and the toll call to Customer Care only cost me money, no guidance or help at all.

Documentation with the computer states that there is an "issue" with AOL and the modem not being usable after the system goes into the standby mode. It states that there is an icon on the desktop labeled "AOL_FIX" that will resolve this situation. The icon was not on my desktop. It further stated that the file would be available at their web site. It wasn't. My 55 minute phone call to Customer Care (remember, this is a toll call) resulted only in me informing the service tech that the file was out there. He (nor anyone in the tech support area when I called) knew anything about the "AOL_FIX" file. I posted on the message board in the community forum on the HP website. Got a short note stating that the file would be available soon, to be patient.

The system itself is a well equipped one. Has plenty of power for the typical home user. I would recommend the system to anyone in the market. The customer service sucks though. You pay for the calls and, as yet, I haven't encountered anyone that knew any more than I did. I really like the system, but I wouldn't buy it again based solely on the poor customer service.
