I bought this CD-Writer for about $100.00 (after rebates) from BestBuy.
Its a great price for a 8X CD-Writer. Hardware installation was a breeze.
I installed it on a Windows 95 machine. This CD writer came with the
Adaptec CD recording software (EasyCD Creator & DirectCD). The software
seemed to have installed easily on the Windows 95 computer. But when I tried to run the EasyCD Creator, I ran into some "Engine Installation" problem. A quick visit to the Adaptec website provided the solution, which basically was to run a program, already existing on the software CD.
Once the installation was complete, burning a CD was very easy. I could
burn a CD in about 9 minutes. One thing I noticed was that it needed
good quality CD-R media to get good speed performance. I used a 12X rated
FujiFilm CDR media, and got excellent results. When I used 8X Imation CDR
media, the burn process was slower, and seemed like 4X speed. I think its
a good idea to go with a 12X rated media to achieve a burn speed of 8X.
I haven't tried CDRW media yet, but I would think that it should burn
them at 4X.
I also tried the trial version of NERO CD Burning software, available on the net, with this CD writer, and got very good results.
The bottom line is that I am very happy with the performance of this
CD Writer, and I think its a great value.
