gym-378's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4050n Laser Printer
Recently, my office's LaserJet 4m had a meltdown and we began looking for a suitable replacement. Since our workgroup configuration relies on a central printer for 10-15 users, we had several requirements for our new printer:
1) It had to be an HP. As far as printers go, our office only purchase HP's because of their excellent service records.
2) It had to be networkable. Since multiple users would be printing to it, we needed a JetDirect card standard.
3) In needed to have multiple paper trays so we weren't having to refill paper all the time.
4) It had to be reasonable priced.
After looking around for a couple of weeks, we landed on the HP 4050N and I don't think we could've ended up with a better printer for the money.
The Features
The 4050N is HP's networked version of the 4050 workhorse. It is packed with a 133mhz processor and 16mb of memory (8 more than the standard 4050). This combination results in extremely fast print jobs, even when it means 20-page documents with lots of charts. We're talking around 20 page per minute at the standard-quality level. In fact, the slowest part of the print process is the warmup stage that the printer goes through when it goes into powersaver mode.
In addition to blazing speeds, the 4050N has two large capacity paper trays and can handle all types of paper sizes and orientations. I also like the fact that we can add a third paper tray if we find a need to.
Oh yeah, did I mention that the High Resolution mode on this printer provides up to 1200 dots per inch? Talk about great looking charts, graphs, and photos. This printer does it all!
The Warranty
It's definitely worth mentioning that HP has created a new flexible warranty plan that lets users choose the length and coverage of their warranty based on their needs. Since I work for a university that has it's own IT techs, we were fine with the standard 1 year warranty that lets us return the printer to HP for repair if something goes wrong. Others, however, might find the extended service plan to provide you with the peace of mind that your printer will be fixed outside of the standard 1 year.
The Price
Okay...the price was a bit high. We paid just under $1400.00, but it was worth it for us to have the JetDirect card and the 16mb of memory as opposed to the 8mb that the 4050 and the 4050se offered made it worth the extra money.
Overall, if this printer lasts as long as our last HP did (6+ years) then we will have made a great investment. I highly recommend this printer to anyone looking for a networkable workhorse that provides high resolution, high quality printouts.
