| daver56's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 5000 R600LG |
I just purchased this machine on Oct 13, 2000. I have been after my boss for almost a year to replace my 3 year old Compaq Armada 4120 (P-I, 16 Meg, 1 Gig, Dual Scan Display). It had been a workhorse but with software getting bigger and bigger and requiring more and more processing power I needed to move up. I could take naps during boot up and some processes. I started out looking at Dell because of their reputation in service and support and their overall rating in the industry. We have two Dell servers at work and have had no problems what so ever. As I stated before I have been looking for some time and Dell offered the most for the money considering the quality of the service and support. Recently I had the occasion to attend a training class and the instructor was using a Sony VAIO with a projector in the class. I started looking at the Sony VAIO product line and comparing systems. The main reason I went with Dell was the 3-year Warranty, Sony only offered a one-year. Otherwise everything I heard was high marks for the Sony line (see opinions on Sony VAIO here at epinion. I had used the warranty on my old Compaq on 3 or 4 times during the 3 years I used it, and it was excellent. I wanted to keep the same type of service I had grown accustom to. I purchased the Dell 5000e model with the 600/500 MHz PIII with 128 Meg of MEM, 10 Gig HD, 14.1 XGA display, 8X DVD, built-in 56K modem, and it was running WIN98 SE (I was leery of ME and don’t need 2000). The unit arrived several days ahead of schedule. On arrival the unit worked great. Coming from an 11" Dual Scan display, the 14.1 XGA was HUGE and BRIGHT. The processor was plenty fast and it was handy to have the modem built in. I do wish Dell offered a built-in 10/100Mhz network port. I used lap link to move my data files to my new toy and away I went. Everything was at or above my level of expectations. The track pad takes a little getting used to but that will just take time. Everything was great UNTIL.....
My DVD drive became ill, it would not read DVD's or CDROM's. I contacted tech suport and a very nice person went through the procedures and found out as I already knew the DVD drive was faulty. Well this was on a Monday Evening and I am writing this on Sat night and I still do not have my new DVD drive. Needless to say I am not happy about the 3 year next business day service that has already taken 5 days (they promise I will have the drive no later than Tues). The order was messed up when first entered and had to be re-entered on Wed. Also I was informed that if the system is less than 30 days old you get a brand new replacement part and not a refurbished part. I know goofs happen and some problems are to be expected.
Over all I am very pleased with the unit, just a little disappointed in the support I received.
