Integrated components aren't as bad as they used to be. In fact, some of the best mobos have integrated components that we used to hate.
For the hardcore users and gamers, sound, LAN, and RAID (and even SATA) are welcomed. Video is still not. Sound has improved so much - especially thanks to nVidia for their nForce2 chipset!
For a system builder, an integrated mobo is very cheap, and makes for a great value PC. Most users don't need high end graphics.

As always. I still don't want a video system integrated on a motherboard, although I admit I never thought of the 'fallback' idea. I suppose the integrated system would do in an emergency. I am happy to see that there is now a decent integrated sound system. I really don't need all the bells and whistles of some sound cards I've seen recently. (Until computers and TV are fully 'converged' I won't be playing DVD on my computer much, except maybe for music videos.) I do need top notch video, however, because I'm into graphics applications.
