The truth about emachines?
Nov 21 '00
I've owned 3 Emachines over the last few years and I have had very little problems. I've read most of the reviews on this board and see that several of the problems relate to power supplies going bad. That is not an expensive problem. You can usually buy them for about $15.00 and replace it yourself with a screwdriver. Many times, cheaper than shipping it back to the factory.
I've read a comment or two claiming that all the parts in the emachines are refurbished. I know that you can buy a refurbished Emachine, they come in a brown box and have the words "REFURBISHED" stamped on it. Some dealers sell them, others don't.
I know that some of the replacement parts are refurbished, however most all major computer manufactures will use refurbished replacement parts. The parts in my Emachine are name brand, the same that you will find in Compaq and HP systems.
I agree that the modems that emachine use are not the greatest. I always replace them with a lucent based chip. If you think that buying a Compaq or HP computer will get you a better modem, think again. They use the same type in several of their models.
Overall I'd rather spend less money on an Emachine than spend more on a popular over rated brand name and get basically the same thing.
I have alittle knowledge about building computers which puts me at an advantage when a problem occurs but if your not handy with these things and money is no object, buy a Gateway computer. They have about the best support and warranties in the business .
