Micron? whats a Micron?
Dec 04 '00
So many people still ask me Micron, what is Micron? Hard to believe Micron is not better known even though they
advertise little.
Micron builds a very good machine, period. Their components work (together), they are fast, and
they are priced very fairly- as opposed to say Gateway. Do you need to do your homework before calling
in an order to them? Do you need to "build your own" on their website to get a price before placing an order
with a salesperson? Should you whittle them down and get a concession on shipping price or
bundled software? Is this not commom sense wherever you shop??
I have purchased more than 70 pc's and servers from Micron in the last two years and have been amazed with
the whole experience. Not one initial failure has occurred, shipping and delivery has been as promised
and service from their people has been outstanding. But, most importantly to me, the pc's have blown
me away with their performance.
My real-world experience by brand:
Compaq: proprietary* to the extreme, not fast, over-priced
HP: also too proprietary, run pretty good though
Micron: fast, well priced, reliable
Gateway: overpriced, hardware ok
Accer: don't do it
Packard Bell: are they still in business??
Dell: good stuff, can find a good deal if you try
Having said all this, there is this- you have to mail order a Micron. If you need to walk
in to a brick and mortar and need to be told what to buy, just go to Best Buy and get a G4.
* by proprietary I mean they install all kinds of annoying Compaq-only related features,
and/or devices. These things I call "insertions" are at best annoying and at worst unusable.
Any computer can be dud, there are no guarantees regardless of Brand. So, all we can do is
play the odds for the best possible outcome- I like the Micron odds.
