Caution: Do not plug an analog modem into a digital multi-branch exchange phone line. Unbeknownst to me, I did just that with my ThinkPad 1400 series. It totally fried the modem which is integrated into the board so there's no removing just the modem for service. I had only had my laptop for two weeks and was just sure I'd be without it for at least a month. I called IBM Customer Support and the friendly voice on the other end told me a carrier would pick it up that same day. All told, from the time I made the call until the time I had repaired laptop in hand - four days. Two of those days were weekend. I love my ThinkPad because it is easy to use, durable, and has all the features I could ever need but the customer service sealed the deal. I'm an IBM girl from here on out!
