| REDDEVILP's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP |
Its Voodoo coming back strong against Geforce and Nvidia with their latest and most powerful (well for another 2 months until the voodoo 6 ships)card yet. The Voodoo5 5500 has a duel ship set, and in my opinion outperformes any other cards on the market today. Playing rainbow six was a pleasure with this card. The graphix were flawless and Anti Aliasing was incredible. However this card would'nt be of much use to any one else except for HARDCORE GAMERS or people that have a lot to do with graphic design, like web designers. But otherwise its just another HUGE card on your Mother board.
And this thing really is huge, I had to move my hard drive over in order to put it in to the AGP slot, my Matrox G400 Card was about half the size of this monster, and now its a bit of a hassle to get to my ram. But the card does do what it promises... Great performance on any thing from the simplest old games to the latest flight sim or racing game.
I Also played Mortal Kombat 4 with this thing, WOW, Sub Zero never looked so good, Masked or Unmasked. The detail is extraordinary, DVD movies look as sharp as can be and no freeze frames. My parents first wondered why I spent $300.00 on a video card, until they themselves started watching DVD's on my computer I havent herd a negative word from them since. My cousin came over, just to go oooohh and aaaaaaahh from the amazing 3d quality, but this still isnt the end for Voodoo, in 2 months they're coming out with voodoo6 6ooo which is going to have 128megs of ram, and blow EVERYTHING on the market away, over the 64 that this one has. But the HARDCORE GAMERS, might want to hold out on this untill then, but that thing will put a dent in your wallet its supposed to cost $600, I'm not that crazy, I'm going to be happy with this card for another couple of years. And if you get it now, I'm sure you'll have the same response.
LATEST UPDATE
I just bought DIABLO II (you've got to love Blizzard, I'll have a reviews on the game pretty soon) and I it played for like 5 minutes, but the main reason I installed it imediatley after getting home was to watch the movie and see truly how wonderfull my voodoo 5 5500 is. Well I've got to tell you I am NOT Disappointedat all, the movie was very sharp, no still screens, and the Anti-Aliasing technology does an excellent job on diagonal lines. As most people know a computer cant draw a perfectly diagonal line due to the fact that pixels are square and are lined up, so you notice the jaged edges on the lines, well I'm not sure what the people at 3DFX did, but it worked, the edges are now hardly noticable and as I mentioned earlier the movie ran very smooth. I'm gonna keep on updating this Epinion, I plan to rent some DVD movies, and see how well the cared fares, but after this I have extreme doubts that 3DFX will disappoint me. And to put it under the ultimate test, I plan to rent "The Matrix", I mean with all those special effects, that should be a task for any video card, even the soon to be released Voodoo6 6000, which will double the ram of the voodoo5, from 64 to 128.
UPDATE
WOW, this is the most painfull thing I've had to do in a while. 3DFX is dead, they have run in to major financial troubles, ended up selling their patents to NVIDIA, and now the Co. is dead. They will continue supporting the cards they made so far, but I beleive they have stoped making new cards. For more info, I once again point you to www.3dfx.com they have the offcial press release up there. :( This has been a painfull day for me. On the brighter side though, I've finished Diablo II (FIANLLY, I took a break from it for a couple of months) and well DIABLO looks COOL, and the movie at the end was Sensational, smooth as silk. I'm still going to watch the matrix on my DVD (havent had the time, I hate school :)
