Surfing the internet at turbo speed!
Sep 10 '00
Remember the good old days when 28.8kbps was considered fast. When waiting minutes for pages to load was common. Then came 56k and everything changed. Well now a few years later 56k is antique and cable is the thing to have. More then a 10 times faster - cable is the future of internet, at least right now it is. Faster and cheaper then DSL it is possibly the best way to get high speed internet access...
Interent speed...
The best reason to get cable is the speed. Let me tell you it is REALLY faster. You will notice it the day you get it. WOW! I typically get 1mpb per second which totally blows 56k away (according to pc magazines internet speed tester). On most website you can easily see the difference. Sites loaded with java, shockwave and other multimedia loads almost instantly. However on some sites that are always really busy it is about the same. Too bad epinions is one of these sites! :(
Downloading...
Downloading is probably where Cable shines the most. If you download lots of stuff like mp3s then cable is definately a must! I went from downloading 1 mp3 on Napster in like 20 minutes with my 56k modem to like 3 mp3s in about 5 minutes. Downloading big games, movies, software is always really fast. You no longer have to start a download at night and hope that it finishes in the morning!
Multiplayer games...
If you play multiplayer games then cable will greatly increase game proformance and reduce lag. Although it does matter what your friends have for a connection, the cable modem will insure that you will almost never get booted from a game for bad ping!
Installation...
Installation is pretty complicated. Usually installation is free and done by your cable company. It involves tapping into the telephone poles on the street and bring a wire to the part of the house you want your modem. Usually you don't have to do anything it is pretty painless. We had some minor problems but only because RCN has really bad customer service.
No more dial up...
With cable you will get instant internet that is always on unless your cable service is down. You turn on your computer and your are already connected to the internet. No more busy signals or getting dropped. Best of all you don't have to hear your modem make all those funny noise while it tries to connect!
The price...
This is one of the few reasons that keep people away from cable. Cable usually cost about 50 bucks a month. If you really think about it is worth it. Usually you pay like 20+ for internet and around 30 something for an extra phone line so its about the same. Plus you get the extra speed with cable access.
Internet sharing...
Have more then 1 computer? Every try to share a 56k internet access. Let me tell you it is sooo slooow! With cable sharing 2 or more computers on the same connection is awesome. All the computers are really fast and you can't notice the difference. I currently share 5 computers on the same cable access and all the computers are still getting like 1mpbs each!!! (If you want to know how to share internet with a cable modem e-mail me and I will gladly show you)
Final thoughts...
I love cable modem and I have no idea how I lived without it before. I strongly recommend it to anyone who spends more then a few hours a week on the internet. Let me tell you I pay $70 a month for cable and a phone line and it is worth every penny!
