This is a review of AOL's java based Instant Messenger called Quickbuddy.

Quickbuddy is a small java-based applet which provides the basic, essential functionality of instant messenger. A buddy list appears which I can edit. I can IM people or create a chat room.

The great thing about the program is that it is really light. It loads very quickly. Being Java-based, I don't have to install any software. I can be at any internet-enabled computer anywhere and in a few seconds be chatting with my friends online. I have used this a lot for odd moments at work, internet cafes, or friend's places.

The other neat (and essential) feature is that your buddy list is kept online (something the regular AIM does not do). Any changes I make are stored by AOL and carry over to the next time I use the program, regardless of where I am.

The main drawback in terms of usability is that I can copy the text in the windows. Thus when a friend mentions something interesting, like a URL, I have to physically type it into my browser. This is really annoying, but if it's the price to pay for such a light, quick-loading applet, then it is a fair sacrifice.

The applet is very stable. I've had up to six or seven conversation windows open at once without it crashing my browser or noticeably slowing it down.

Obviously quickbuddy only makes sense for people who already use AIM or AOL and have people on their buddy lists to talk to.
